Our Emmanuel School was first founded by Pastor Francois, lovingly known as “Papa,” in the early 1970s. The very first “school” was a simple structure made of palm leaves and sticks, yet it provided primary education to children in the community. It wasn’t until the 1980s that a proper school building was constructed, and years later, Emmanuel expanded again—opening the first high school in the community.
Through every hurdle and challenge, our mission has remained the same: to provide access to education for the community of Bombardopolis, Haiti.
Each year, countless children in our community dream of attending school. Sadly, because of the severe poverty families face, that dream often goes unfulfilled. As Haiti endures one of the most challenging seasons in its history, many parents have been unable to earn the income needed to pay for their child’s education. Most families rely on selling goods in the local market or making charcoal to survive, but the scarcity of available goods has drastically reduced their ability to earn a living.
For those who can afford tuition, it often comes at the cost of sacrificing meals for their family. Too many children arrive at school hungry, with growling stomachs. Some walk over to the orphanage to ask missionaries for food. At Emmanuel School, we provide one meal each day for every student—regardless of whether their tuition has been paid. For many, this may be the only meal they receive that day.
