Self sustainability is one of our biggest goals at Emmanuel. While we address the immediate needs that are inevitable, we truly believe in helping with a long term solution in mind. Our hope is to see our children evolve on their own without creating a dependence for assistance.

"Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" is a quote we all believe in and strive to implement at Emmanuel Children's Home. We believe in education and teaching the children life skills that will help them survive once they go out into the world on their own. Producing our own food through means of agriculture will give our children food security in a country where the cost of supplies has increased by 300% in the last few years. It continues to become more and more challenging and costly to access nutritious foods.
Self sustainability is not a goal that we can achieve overnight. We continue to brainstorm more ways to become the most self sufficient, through solar power, raising our own animals and harvesting our own crops. With your help and support, we can provide the children with the animals, supplies and equipment to begin making this dream a reality. To help a specific project, visit our links below: |
Farm AnimalsOne of our big prayers at Emmanuel is to be able to provide the children with food security in the most self-sustainable way possible. Due to the remote location of the orphanage, food supply is very limited. We are forced to purchase supplies from more developed towns that are hours away and then hire a trucker to bring the food to us. Due to the increased insecurity and instability of Haiti, finding resources and transportation has become harder and more expensive through the years. We believe that by purchasing and breeding our own animals such as chickens, goats, pigs and cows we will always be able to provide the children with the protein they need at a fraction of the cost.

HydroponicsWe are very thankful for a long time friend of the orphanage, we received our very first hydroponics kit in 2022. We began experimenting with this new approach towards self-sustainability and look forward to watching our gardens continue to grow. This method would be quite revolutionary for our community as they have not been exposed to this way of growing produce. It is our hope that we will be able to successfully implement and upkeep the system for the orphanage. We welcome all advice and helpful hints to encourage better long term success.

AgricultureFor years we have been trying our best to plant and harvest our own potatoes, corn and vegetables. Each season we find ourselves tearing up the garden and starting over. Due to the harsh environment it has been very hard to maintain.
A goal of ours is to build a green house and install a proper irrigation system to ensure our efforts that go into preparing the land and planting the seeds will bare fruit. As of 2020 we have 24/7 access to water on our property through our pump. Building an irrigation system will be one of our easier projects, but unfortunately due to so many other needs, we have not been able to get it done. Our hopes for 2023-2024 is to have an abundance of nutrients for our children, with some left over to sell at the local market. |
