We are very thankful for a long time friend of the orphanage. We received our very first hydroponics kit in 2022. We began experimenting with this new approach towards self-sustainability and look forward to watching our gardens continue to grow. This method would be quite revolutionary for our community as they have not been exposed to this way of growing produce. It is our hope that we will be able to successfully implement and upkeep the system for the orphanage. We welcome all advice and helpful hints to encourage better long term success.
What is hydroponics?
Hydroponics is the process of gardening, without the need for soil. The water flows through the system to provide nutrients, hydration and oxygen to support plant life. Each system takes up minimal space and uses 90% less water than traditional agriculture. The hydroponics system fosters rapid growth and yields superior quality produce.
Why would hydroponics be so beneficial in Haiti?
Hydroponics would be blessing in Bombardopolis for many reasons! Emmanuel Children's Home is located in the mountain region, where we experience much soil erosion and recurrent droughts yearly. In 2022 we experienced one of the worst droughts, and unfortunately lost many of our crops. To prepare the land for crops takes a lot of time and energy through hand plowing. To eliminate preparing the land will expedite our growing process and create a quicker turn over of produce for consumption and sale.
What foods can be grown with hydroponics?
Almost any crop can be grown hydroponically. Some of the most common that will be nutritious for our children are: leafy lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and herbs.
How long does it take to grow lettuce hydroponically?
Most varieties grow quick and can be harvested more than once. Through the use of hydroponics you can have fresh, healthy leaves ready to harvest within 6-8 weeks.
